Muzzles?!

MUZZLES!?

What’s your first thought? Is it positive or negative? What do you know about them? Should you use one!?

A muzzle is simply a guard that is placed over the dog’s nose to prevent any potential bites from happening. How do you feel when you see one being used? I think we should be glad to see a dog who is wearing a muzzle! The Pawrent has already identified a biting risk and has chosen a great source of management to ensure everyone's safety! We are responsible not only for the safety of ourselves and our dogs but for the public as well. This also allows dogs the chance to satisfy their natural desires… to explore, to sniff, to make new associations, and to be social. It also allows them to work on their emotional response toward their “triggers.” Over time we aim to help them feel safer and more confident within those contexts. (This is where training comes in!)

Who could make use of a muzzle?

  • Dogs who have a history of aggression.
  • Dogs who have shown aggressive behavior towards veterinary staff, known or unknown people, children, dogs, small animals, etc.
  • For emergencies where an injury occurs to your dog. An injured animal may resort to aggressive behavior!
  • Everyone! It's better to have the skill and not need it!

What to look for in a muzzle? Your dog should be able to open their mouth. They should be able to take treats, drink, and pants with it on. Also, look at the strap sizing and quality to ensure a safe fit.

The process of associating a muzzle with your dog doesn’t have to be bad! In fact, it shouldn’t be! This process should be fun and enjoyable! Here are some amazing resources if you're considering muzzle training your dog or want more in-depth information!
