Lessons Learned From A Student & Educator

Lessons Learned From A Student & Educator

I've always been interested in the idea of teaching, but I’ve never felt I had a deep enough understanding to confidently offer guidance to others. That changed when I learned of the behavioral sciences.

By learning and educating, I have, and continue, to learn many lessons.

I have learned of the complex relationship between behavior and emotion. Behavior produces itself from an underlying emotion. Understanding how your dog feels is essential to addressing their underlying concerns, the root cause of their undesirable behaviors.

I have learned to focus on the “bigger picture”. We often get caught up in the smallest details while being blind to massive factors that are being missed. This can include unsatiated species-typical needs such as the need for nosework in dogs.

I have learned that relationships are a give-and-take equation. We should never aim to suppress the feelings of another animal, human or dog. Learning how to ensure everyone’s needs are met sustainably, is the optimal solution. Welfare and well-being should always be priority #1.

I have learned to gather information accurately. This means learning through sources that have high standards of practice and are up-to-date with the most recent scientific research. This continually increases my knowledge, observational, and practical skills, which in turn benefits dogs and their families. The more we “see”, the more accurately we can assess our understanding of the current situation.

I have learned that teaching is not only providing instruction but also being an open ear, a shoulder to lean on - to be a strong pillar of support. Everyone has their unique path which includes many triumphs and defeats. Being there to support not only the dogs but their humans, is important to my work.

You, the community, have enabled me to pursue my dream of working with your dogs and family. Entrusting someone with your loved ones isn't easy. Each and every one of you is appreciated. Without you, this community would not be here.

"None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful." - Mother Teresa
